Bright lights, big city: How Philly’s new streetlights could make us safer
Brightness, in and of itself, does not fully address the issue of safety. Bright lights are often glary and with the newer over glary car headlights, the combination may be a cause for more accidents precipitated by light blindness. Also, having the same intensity of brightness in residential areas as those in commercial corridors could lead to light pollution invading homes and disturbing sleep/wake patterns which could contribute to long-term problems associated with sleep deprivation. Miller Design Group designed a successful street lighting program for Historic Fabric Row and Arch Street via our work with Community Design Collaborative.
